I have an enduring fascination with maps and diagrams. It amazes me to describe landscape and our movements through space with symbols and shorthand.
In these new works on paper, systematic mapping strategies combine with my "be in the moment" approach. I want to explore the boundaries between the natural world and the technological environment and chart the shifting nature of experience. The alternating clusters of calligraphy and open areas of emptiness suggest boundaries and vistas. Some pictures emphasize flatness; you can only see the surface. Others open into a cosmic depth, showing the spaces between and distances apart. The images become landscapes that reconfigure reality and create an environment of strange connections, a passage through life. -Mara Metcalf
