Most of my works on paper are monotypes, an image printed on paper where there is only one print. Although my training was in the traditional printmaking technique of etching, I decided fifteen years ago to put aside the acids and solvent based materials and work only with safer and non-toxic printmaking processes and materials. I can now work in my home studio without ventilation and not worry about my health. My most recent prints reference my travels. For a number of years I have recorded my daily travel experiences in a journal where I have diagramed the events of each day using marks and symbols. The diagrams capture where I went, what I saw, what I did, and impressions I formed. They can be read like a map. Recently I began to incorporate my drawings into my prints. Sometimes the events are clearly depicted and sometimes I layer drawings one upon another so that the days blur together just as my memory of a trip blurs the days. I enjoy this method of making art because I relive the events of my trips with each print. |
